SCE Inspect App

Flagship Project

This course is truly a story in evolution. When I was first asked to do this project, I was tasked with creating a job aid for this new tool that the field was going to use to help prevent fires with. It was an app for their iPads that helped detect outdated and risky equipment, such as old electric poles and wiring. The initial document was about three pages with images, it quickly grew into a User Guide and then became an elearning. This was truely a practice of patience in the Agile methodolgy as the app grew a new feature or function almost on a weekly basis. My role was to design and develop wing-2-wing through each iteration.

  • My role: wing-2-wing designer and developer

  • Audience: SCE Field Engineers

  • Tools: Storyline 360, SnagIt, Photoshop

  • Year: 2021

Process (Agile)

I designed and developed an interactive, blended elearning systems training in Articulate Storyline 360. I used lots of interactions to create a hands on type of experience allowing the learners to get a feel for the tool. I used action mapping and created a prototype to complete the final course. The storyboard in this project was the ongoing documentation of changes. This was done by the PM and included in weekly meetings (which I recorded) where we would review updates and deliverables for the training.

Action Map

This is the original action map and the sections remained constant with updates and new features added where appropriate.

Prototype

Taking pictures of equipment that was outdated was a big part for the development of this app and this feature went through many iterations. Once the stakeholders approved the content and look and feel, I moved on to wing-2-wing design and development.

Final Product

Through the iterations of this course, I must say that I became an expert in Agile methodology. Looking back, I think it's extremely important to get tools for fire safety "just right", after all fire is a season in SoCal.

Results and key points

Having been used to the ADDIE method througout my career, I found the Agile approach a little frustrating in the beginning. When I realized how important it is to the development of first rate software I changed my tune quickly.

The Inspect App was instrumental in helping field techs find and mitigate fire danger risks. The app was able to record the issue, map the location and sync to a database where all defective equipment was stored.

The app and the course was well received. I intentionally used interactive elements with engaging activities to involve the learners.
