Vinfast Onboarding

Vinfast is a new electric automotive company in America. This onboarding course was the first of it's kind for the company and it ended up being translated into four other languages and shared globally.

Flagship Project

Vinfast is a Vietnamese electric vehicle company. Because of this they were unknown in America. To address this and create a feeling of acceptance, my job was to introduce Vinfast to the American workforce. It was important to know about it's background and the company as well as knowing all about the Vinfast vehicles. This onboarding wasn't a typical onboarding in that it goes far beyond the company and it's mission and culture. The course was a handshake with America educating the employees on Vietnam, the company, the culture, the mission, the brand, the technical aspects of the car and the services.

  • My role: wing-2-wing designer and developer

  • Audience: Vinfast global employees (after translations)

  • Tools: Articulate Storyline

  • Year: 2022

Process (ADDIE)

I designed and developed an interactive, blended elearning in Articulate Rise 360. I used videos from the Chairman, CEO and corporate team to introduce the company and to impart a feeling of belonging and importance to the employees. I used action mapping, storyboarding, and created a prototype to complete the final course. Prior to start, I conducted a kickoff meeting to initiate the project and complete my analysis of what was needed.

Action Map

Because the concept of online courses was a completely new concept to some in the company, I decided to get buyin before starting. I scheduled a meeting with the stakeholders to get approval and to see if they wanted to add to the map.

Storyboard

I created a storyboard to reflect each section before creating the prototype. I created the storyboard with text and images to offer a more full effect of what the course would look and feel like. After a little back and forth I was able to proceed.

Prototype

The prototype included the About and Product sections of the map. There were interactive elements from stepped processes to drag-n-drops along with videos detailing the car specs.

Final Product

Once the prototype was approved, I went full throttle and completed the project. This course ended with twelve sections, which in my opinion, is long for an onboarding course. All the more reason to season generously with blended learning. Because of the length I used knowledge checks with interactivities after each section to re-enforce the learning.

Results and key points

This onboarding course was pretty comprehensive, in a good way. The American employees enjoyed learning about the Vietnamese culture and about electric vehicles. The Vietnamese executives loved the learning platform and content.

This went so well we shared it with Vinfast Germany who then shared the course with all of Europe. We also sent it to Vietnam where they created their own version based upon our version. I don't know how many translations there were, but I heard quite a few.
